For Dee Why boat sweep Shaun Stacey is was really about getting some good racing in and having no high expectations at the Bilgola carnival on Saturday.
The last thing he expected was to win the final, especially as the Cronulla Wildcats crew got away to a flying start.
”They certainly jumped out well, ” Shaun said.
“There was a good, deep patch down this (southern) end and I was trying to get a part of it and he wasn’t letting me do it.
“When we turned the cans I did see a set roll and I was hoping they’d get to us before it was too late, which it did.
“We got a good run on a big one and managed to draw down next to them.”
The Cronulla sweep couldn’t hold their boat on the bank and they slewed slightly which allowed the Bilgola Bennys to come through into second place.
Stacey said the Dee Why boys with a new crew member in Chris Mackinnon were very competitive all day
