Tommy Hand and DYSLSC
Tommy Hand joined DYSLSC in 1962, he gained his Bronze Medallion in the 1963/64 Season and patrolled until the 1976/77 Season when he became a Long Serving Member. He was elected as a Life Member of DYSLSC at the 1977 AGM. Tommy also gained his Resuscitation, ARC and Instructors Certificates whilst he was a patrolling member. Tommy served on the Management Committee of DYSLSC from 1963 through to 1987 (24 years) primarily at the Boat Captain but in the first 5 years he was also the Gear Steward then again as the Boat Captain from 2000 to 2003.
Tommy Hand was a regular at our Sunday morning events placing in Surfboat and Beach Sprint Club Championships until 1980. As a Junior Boatie he had to set the cans for the swim events as there were no power craft back then. Interclub Competition saw him compete for DYSLSC in Board and Ski events winning medals at Branch in Relays. Tommy was asked to start Sweeping Surfboats and whilst he had never rowed competitively himself, he was a natural. Over the last 40+ years Sweeping he has mentored many crews winning numerous medals at all levels of competition.
Above all Tommy Hand is a true Club man who spent many hours assisting with fundraising events and repairs around the club over the 27 years of his involvement with DYSLSC before moving to Queenscliff SLSA, which he only did because there were no boat crews at DYSLSC at the time.
Tommy Hand has a great sense of humour so a Comedy Night is the perfect fundraiser for him. The Management Committee would like to see as many DYSLSC Members as possible attend this night for Tommy.
